McCoy Pottery

The Nelson McCoy Sanitary Stoneware Company was founded in April of 1910. Located in Roseville, Ohio then manufactured and sold functional and decorative stoneware. They also mined, bought and sold clay. They soon built a building in the Roseville area because of the availability of clay and the land that the city donated free of cost. By 1925, after 15 years the McCoy family divested itself of interest in other pottery companies mentioned above and began to expand the Nelson McCoy Sanitary Stoneware Company. During the late 20's and into the 30's the Pottery produced products that were fired with blended glazes and the designs were predominately dominated by, leaf and berry motifs. These glazes were earthy tones of brown and green. Nelson McCoy, Sr., Nelson Melick, and later Nelson McCoy, Jr. operated the pottery for 57 years until it was sold in 1967 to the owners of the Mt. Clemens Pottery Co., although Nelson McCoy, Jr., remained as president of the pottery. After about seven years of operation the Lancaster Colony Corporation purchased the pottery in 1974. In 1981 Nelson McCoy, Jr., retired. In 1985, the pottery was sold once again, this time to Designer Accents of New Jersey. Designer Accents operated for about five years until closing in late 1990. The portion of the pottery containing the offices burned in the fall of 1991
