Abingdon was founded in 1908 as the Abingdon Sanitary Manufacturing Company They originally produced toilet fixtures and commodes. The company is named after the town it was located in, Abingdon, Illinois. During the depression, the lack of new construction caused the company to find another outlet for its pottery. They soon started producing artware. In 1945 the company changed their name to reflect their new line of products; Abingdon Potteries, Inc. In 1951 when the company was sold and began producing sanitary products again, the name was changed again to Briggs Manufacturing.
